At EthicWorks Immigration Services, we guide students through every stage of their Canadian journey from choosing the right program to extending their study permit, transitioning to work, and planning for Permanent Residency.

OFF-SHORE STUDENTS

(Applying for a Study Permit from Outside Canada)

If you are planning to begin your education in Canada, the first step is securing admission to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Once admitted, your study permit application must clearly demonstrate that you are a genuine student with sufficient financial support and a clear academic purpose.

A complete study permit application requires

A valid Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
Proof of sufficient funds covering tuition, living expenses, and return travel
Medical examination clearance (if applicable)
Police clearance, where required
A properly drafted statement explaining your study plan and future goals Certain applicants may also require a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL), depending on current IRCC policy.

ON-SHORE STUDENTS

(Already Studying in Canada)

If you are already in Canada and your study permit will expire before you complete your program, you must apply for a study permit extension to maintain legal status. An extension application must be submitted before your current permit expires. If applied on time, you benefit from maintained status, which allows you to continue studying while awaiting a decision.

A complete study permit application requires

A valid passport, a recent Letter of Enrolment confirming active registration, an updated Letter of Acceptance if you have changed institutions or programs, proof that you continue to meet financial requirements, and a clear explanation letter where necessary. If your permit has already expired, restoration of status may be possible within 90 days, subject to eligibility and additional government fees.

For International Students

International students are permitted to change institutions; however, the new institution must also be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and must meet the conditions attached to your current study permit. Failure to properly update your DLI information can impact your legal student status and future immigration eligibility.

Students transferring to a different level of study (for example, from college to university) or changing programs significantly must ensure their study permit conditions remain valid. In some cases, a new study permit application may be required. Maintaining proper records of your institution change is important, as it can affect your eligibility for future pathways such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit and Permanent Residency. We assist onshore students with DLI updates, compliance reviews, program transfer guidance, and documentation preparation to ensure the change is properly recorded and does not affect future immigration opportunities.
