TRV Stamp (Temporary Resident Visa Stamping)

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) stamp is required for certain foreign nationals who wish to enter or re-enter Canada. Individuals who already hold a valid study permit, work permit, or visitor status may need to apply for a TRV in order to travel back to Canada after leaving the country. The TRV is placed in the passport and confirms that the holder is authorized to travel to a Canadian port of entry, where a border officer will determine final admission.

Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)

A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) allows Canadian permanent residents who are outside Canada without a valid PR card to return to Canada by commercial transportation such as an airplane. Permanent residents who travel abroad and whose PR card has expired or is not available must apply for a PRTD before returning to Canada. Applicants must demonstrate that they continue to meet the permanent resident residency obligation under Canadian immigration law.

Proof of residency obligation (generally 730 days in Canada within the last 5 years, unless exceptions apply)
